چکیده

Deep reinforcement learning (deep RL) agents have achieved remarkable success in a broad range of game-playing and continuous control tasks. While these agents are effective at maximizing rewards, it is often unclear what strategies they use to do so. In this paper, we take a step toward explaining deep RL agents through a case study in three Atari 2600 environments. In particular, we focus on understanding agents in terms of their visual attentional patterns during decision making. To this end, we introduce a method for generating rich saliency maps and use it to explain 1) what strong agents attend to 2) whether agents are making decisions for the right or wrong reasons, and 3) how agents evolve during the learning phase. We also test our method on non-expert human subjects and find that it improves their ability to reason about these agents. Our techniques are general and, though we focus on Atari, our long-term objective is to produce tools that explain any deep RL policy.

Visualizing Dynamics: from t-SNE to SEMI-MDPs

Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL) is a trending field of research, showing great promise in many challenging problems such as playing Atari, solving Go and controlling robots. While DRL agents perform well in practice we are still missing the tools to analayze their performance and visualize the temporal abstractions that they learn. In this paper, we present a novel method that automatically d...

Computing Makes the “Man”: Programmer Creativity and the Platform Technology of the Atari Video Computer System

Some of the cultural and technical forces that influenced the creation of the “man” (the player-controlled element) in two early home video games, Pitfall! and Yars’ Revenge, are discussed. We find that the specific nature of the Atari Video Computer System (also known as the Atari VCS and Atari 2600) as a computing platform enables and constrains what can be done on the system, and that it als...

Beating Atari with Natural Language Guided Reinforcement Learning

We introduce the first deep reinforcement learning agent that learns to beat Atari games with the aid of natural language instructions. The agent uses a multimodal embedding between environment observations and natural language to self-monitor progress through a list of English instructions, granting itself additional reward for completing instructions in addition to increasing the game score. ...

Deep Learning for Real-Time Atari Game Play Using Offline Monte-Carlo Tree Search Planning

The combination of modern Reinforcement Learning and Deep Learning approaches holds the promise of making significant progress on challenging applications requiring both rich perception and policy-selection. The Arcade Learning Environment (ALE) provides a set of Atari games that represent a useful benchmark set of such applications. A recent breakthrough in combining model-free reinforcement l...

Learning from the memory of Atari 2600

We train a number of neural networks to play games Bowling, Breakout and Seaquest using information stored in the memory of a video game console Atari 2600. We consider four models of neural networks which differ in size and architecture: two networks which use only information contained in the RAM and two mixed networks which use both information in the RAM and information from the screen. As ...
